Squamous Cell Carcinoma-SCC is a type of skin cancer of the cell the form the top layer of normal skin. It is the second most common type of skin cancer with a large number of new cases each year. The legions of SCC grow and cause damage to the nearby skin and tissue and in certain cases spread all over the body and cause death. It is normally caused due to the over exposure to the sun over the entire life time of the patient. Skin that easily becomes red, over exposure to the sun and patients with previous skin cancer are susceptible to SCC. It has been found that men are more likely to be affect by this condition than women and rarely occurs below the age of 50 and usually after the age of 70. It can also occur in patients who consume certain medications like cyclosporine. The squamous cell carcinoma legions may occur anywhere on the body but are common on the ear, face, neck, hands, arm and legs which are more exposed to the sun. These legions have an appearance of scaly red patches ,open sores or crusted nodules. The diagnosis by a doctor will require a skin biopsy or sample which is observed under a microscope for confirmation. It is treated by the complete surgical removal of the cancerous tissue or by specialized surgery called Mohs micrographic surgery. At its early stage if diagnosed it can be treated by local destructive chemotherapy. Research articles into the treatment methods can be found in journals on squamous cell carcinoma.
