Species Peer Review Journals

The species (About this soundlistening) is the basic classification unit and an organism's taxonomic rank, as well as a unit of biodiversity. A species is often defined as the largest group of organisms where any two individuals of the respective sexes or types of mating can produce fertile offspring, typically through sexual reproduction. All species (except viruses) get a dual name, a "binomial." The genus to which the species belongs is the first part of a binomial. The second element is called the specific name or epithet (in botanical nomenclature, occasionally even in zoological nomenclature). For example, Boa constrictor is one of four species of the genus Boa, with the epithet of the species being constrictor.
