Freshwater prawn farming shares many features with, and many of the same problems as, marine shrimp farming. Distinctive problems are introduced by the growing lifecycle of the main species. The global yearly production of freshwater prawns in 2010 was around 670,000 tons, of which China made 615,000 tons (92%). Eyestalk ablation is the elimination of one (unilateral) / both (bilateral) eyestalks from a crustacean. It is regularly practiced on female shrimps (or prawns) in almost all marine shrimp reproduction or maturation facility in the world, both research and commercial. More lately, WSSV outbursts in Saudi Arabia in farming operations for Indian white shrimp provided more evidence that extra biosecurity was needed and since 2009, outbursts of a new bacterial disease, Acute Hepato-pancreatic Necrosis Syndrome (AHPNS) – which started in China and blowout to Vietnam, Malaysia and Thailand, and later to Mexico in 2013.
