Sensor Network Security

Sensor networks consist of tiny, low-cost wireless electronic devices capable of collecting and forwarding environmental information to a base station. The limited computational and communication capabilities enforced by their reduced cost and size introduce a plethora of resource-related challenges in function and efficiency, let alone safety. The majority of existing security schemes and techniques are deemed unsuitable for the sensors’ design constraints and require careful redesign. In sensor networks, the task of intrusion detection becomes more complicated, as power consumption determines the lifetime of the sensors, and hence the lifetime of the network. As a result, any additional functionality should aim to make as little use as possible of the radio (the most ravenous component of a sensor in terms of energy), while requiring the least possible memory.
