The blood pressure is determined by both the amount of blood pumped by your heart and the amount of blood flow resistance in your arteries. The higher your blood pressure, the more blood your heart pumps and the narrower your arteries. High blood pressure ( hypertension) can be present for years without any symptoms. High blood pressure or
hypertension increases the risk of
stroke and heart disease. Risk factors for
hypertension include obesity, too much drinking, smoking and family history. The beta-blockers are a common
hypertension treatment. The damage to the blood vessels and your heart continues and can be detected even without symptoms. Uncontrolled high blood pressure, including
heart attack and stroke, increases your risk of serious
health problems. High blood pressure generally develops over many years, and eventually affects almost everyone. Luckily
high blood pressure can be detected easily. And once you know the blood pressure is high, you can work with your doctor to control it.
Hypertension prevalence varies across WHO regions, as well as country income groups. The WHO African Region has the highest
hypertension prevalence (27 percent) while the WHO Region of the Americas has the lowest
hypertension prevalence (18 per cent). This increase is mainly due to an increase in risk factors for
hypertension in those populations.
Hypertension is a severe medical condition that may increase the risk of heart, brain, kidney, and other conditions.
