Psychological First Aid

Psychological First Aid (PFA) is a method intended to alleviate the occurrence of post-traumatic stress disorder. It was established in 2006 by the National Center for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (NC-PTSD), a division of the Department of Veterans Affairs of the United States. This was distributed by the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies International Union, the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), the American Psychological Association (APA), among several others. First aid psychology includes compassionate, encouraging and realistic treatment for fellow human beings suffering from severe crisis events. According to the NC-PTSD, psychological first aid is a systematic approach focused on research to assist people in the immediate aftermath of catastrophe and terrorism in mitigating initial anxiety and in promoting short and long-term coping functions.
