Plasmodium Ovale

The last malaria parasite in humans to be discovered is Plasmodium ovale. Stippling of the infected erythrocyte and the periodicity has led investigators to consider it a form of Plasnodium vivax. Craig in the 1900 found a malaria parasite in the blood of soldiers returning from the Philippines with unusual morphological features and a fever pattern which is believed to be Plasmodium ovale. The description of Macfie and Ingram in 1917 of the blood in a child from the Gold coast may also have been Plasmodium ovale. Futher Stephens describes erythrocytes in blood of patients from east Africa which is oval and fimbriated edges and published his finding in 1922 and names the parasite Plasmodium ovale.
