Plant Biochemistry Science Uses
Plant
biochemistry is that the study of the
biochemistry of autotrophic organisms like
photosynthesis and other
plant specific biochemical processes. The plants and higher fungi produce through their metabolism a vast variety of chemical substances. These are important for the
plant itself, but also for the
environment and for the recovery and use by humans. The
Plant Biochemistry deals with biochemical processes of
plant metabolism. The entirety of the vital processes of plants is also known as
plant physiology. The
plant biochemistry is therefore a branch of Biochemistry. Plants harness sunlight energy, fixes atmospheric carbon dioxide, and produce a diverse array of chemical compounds to survive in challenging ecological niches. Plant-derived metabolites are also major sources of human food, fibre, fuel, and medicine. The Biochemistry/Botany 621 course covers topics associated with
plant metabolism and discusses how plants generate carbon and energy sources by
photosynthesis and synthesize various compounds through complex networks of metabolic pathways. Various analytical tools that are used in
plant biochemistry research will be also introduced.
Biochemistry is that the study of the chemical processes in living organisms. It deals with the structure and the function of cellular components such as:
proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, nucleic acids and other biomolecules. Although there is a vast number of different biomolecules, many of them are complex and large molecules, composed of similar repeating subunits.
