Palliative Chemotherapy Open Access Journals
Cancer specialists (cancer experts) recommend
chemotherapy in one of two situations. For some cancers,
chemotherapy can completely eliminate
cancer with a good chance that it will never come back. Examples include several types of lymphoma,
leukemia and testicular cancer, among others. For most cancers that have spread (spread outside the original
cancer site),
chemotherapy cannot cure cancer. However,
chemotherapy can help in reducing cancer, correcting or completely eliminating the sad symptoms caused by
cancer for a certain period of time and helping you live longer. The use of
chemotherapy in this situation is called palliative chemotherapy.
Chemotherapy usually helps to shrink the
tumor and treat it effectively. Some examples are lymphoma, leukemia, and testicular cancer. For cancers that have spread (when the disease spreads to various parts of the body),
chemotherapy is needed in combination with other treatment modalities. Palliative
chemotherapy helps in increasing the life expectancy of metastatic
cancer patients.
