Next Generation Impact Factor

The impact factor for journals has long dominated the academic publishing assessment. Based on quote indexing, and conceived more than four decades ago, unlikely developers of the impact factor expected its widespread acceptance and longevity, nor its supposed misuse. Nevertheless the winds are likely to shift. Paul Wouters and his co-authors insist in a recent article in Nature that scholarly publishing needs a "broader, more-transparent suite" of journal indicators, and explore what this might look like. The organization should make recommendations on the use of indicators, educate stakeholders on good practice and provide guidance on the publication and sharing of open access data.
