Hormones: Hormones.
Estrogen and progesterone, two
hormones which stimulate the development of the uterine lining in preparation for pregnancy during each menstrual cycle, appear to promote the growth of fibroids. Fibroids have more receptors for
estrogen and progesterone than normal uterine muscle
cells do. Symptoms of pain and pressure associated with uterine fibroids usually result from the weight of the fibroid itself pressing or resting on the pelvic organs, rather than hurting the fibroid itself. A
green tea bioflavonoid called EGCG may help to reduce fibroid size and number. Chasteberry, or vitex, is used for excessive menstrual bleeding, periods of discomfort and other symptoms. Castor oil is a herbal oil that can be used as a supplement to help with constipation on occasion.
