Membrane Protein Scholarly Open Access Journals

Membrane proteins expose surfaces ideally suited for incorporation into membranes or for binding to them. Integral membrane proteins have hydrophobic surfaces that allow and demand the incorporation of them into the lipid bilayer's hydrophobic portion. Integral membrane proteins may be either transmembrane. Peripheral membrane proteins bind through compatible binding sites to integral membrane proteins, and decorate membrane surfaces to support membrane functions. The plasma membrane contains non-phospholipid molecules, mostly other lipids and proteins.  Cholesterol molecules help the plasma membrane retain its shape. Many of the proteins contained in the plasma membrane help other substances cross the membrane. The plasma membranes contain certain protein types, too. A membrane protein is a protein molecule attached to, or associated with, a cell or organelle's membrane. Membrane proteins can be placed in two groups , based on how the membrane is associated with the protein.
