Limonoids Top Journals
Limonoids are one of the most important bioactive elements of citrus fruits due to their versatile health-promoting and disease-preventing properties. Limonoids are classified as tetranortriterpenoids, highly oxygenated and modified triterpenes. The term limonoid is derived from limonin, the first component of limonoid that is identified as the bitter component of citrus. Compounds belonging to this category have demonstrated a variety of biological activities such as insecticidal, insect antifeed and growth-regulating insect behavior as well as antibacterial, antifungal, antimalarial, antiviral, and a host of other human pharmacological activities. Some limonoids are neem tree-rich antifeedants such as azadirachtin. Oranges rich in vitamin C give another essential but lesser-known nutritional bonus: citrus limonoids. Citrus limonoids have been shown in laboratory tests with animals and with human
cells to help combat mouth, skin, lung, breast cancers, stomach and colon cancer.
