Large-scale geoengineering is still at the concept stage, advocates claim that if the world wants to avoid the worst effects of climate change it may eventually become essential. Geoengineering, large-scale manipulation of a particular process that is central to controlling Earth's climate for the purpose of gaining a particular benefit. Global climate is controlled by the amount of solar radiation that Earth receives and also by the fate of this energy in the Earth system — that is, how much Earth's surface absorbs and how much is reflected or re-radiated back into space. Several mechanisms control the reflectance of solar radiation, including Earth's albedo surface and cloud coverage and the presence of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide (CO2 ) in the atmosphere. If geoengineering proposals are to have any meaningful influence on global climate, they must intentionally alter the relative influence of one of those control mechanisms. Geoengineering proposals were initially developed in the mid 20th century. Cloud seeding works on a regional scale, with the aim of influencing weather systems for agricultural benefit. Today's geoengineering proposals have focused on the global scale , especially as evidence of increasing atmospheric CO2 concentrations and hence the prospect of global warming has mounted.
