Inheritance Of Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis is a common disease of the joints that occurs mainly in adults. This condition is characterized by the dislocation of the cartilage, the hard but flexible tissue that covers the ends of the bones in the joints and allows smooth joint movements. One or more parts of the body can be affected, most often the palms of the hands, spine, shoulders, waist or knees. People inherit an increased risk of developing osteoarthritis, rather than the condition itself. This tendency can be passed down to generations in families, but the pattern of succession is unknown. Osteoarthritis is most common in middle age or late adulthood, because the cartilage in the joints naturally begins to thinning as people grow older.
