Chemistry increasingly developed as a separate science in the second half of the eighteenth century thanks to the research directed by Antoine-Laurent Lavoisier, who gave it novel founding methods and principles. Lavoisier achieved a true revolution that his colleagues saw as a break with the past. According to Lavoisier, the amount of elements had to be determined from experimental inquiries and the results of chemical analysis. He decided that at least 33 elements or simple substances existed in nature. Modern chemistry, not a direct outgrowth of alchemy, though the rising discipline utilized the characteristic instruments and symbols of alchemy. In actual fact, alchemy lasted alongside the new chemical science. The origins of modern chemistry lie, as an alternative, in medicine, pharmacy, natural philosophy, mineralogy, and artisanal practices. Modern chemistry was efficiently born from the convergence between a completely new quantity of theoretical and the empirical knowledge of workmen and craftsmen concerning the characteristics and reactions of substances.
