Heart Failure Online Journals
Heart failure is the inability of heart to supply adequate blood flow and therefore oxygen delivery to peripheral
tissues and organs. Heart failure may be a clinical
syndrome caused by disease or other abnormal conditions within the body. Heart failure is often caused by internal factors such as intrinsic disease or
pathology and from external factors that place excessive demands upon the heart. Intrinsic disease includes conditions such as dilated
cardiomyopathy and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. Perfusion of organs results in reduced exercise capacity, fatigue, and shortness of breath. It also can cause organ dysfunction (e.g., renal failure) in some patients. External factors that can lead the way to
heart failure include increased
stroke volume (caused by increased blood volume or arterial-venous shunts), uncontrolled
hypertension and hormonal disorders (e.g., hyperthyroidism, and pregnancy).
