Health-equity
Health equity or equity in
health implies that ideally everyone should have a good opportunity to achieve their full
health potential which nobody should be disadvantaged from achieving this potential. Creating
health equity may be a guiding priority and core value of APHA. By
health equity, we mean everyone has the chance to achieve their highest level of health. Inequities are made when hindrances keep people and networks from getting to these conditions and arriving at their maximum capacity. Inequities differ from
health disparities, which are differences in
health status between people associated with social or demographic factors like race, gender, income or geographical area .
Health disparities are a method we will measure our progress toward achieving
health equity. We value all people equally. We optimize the conditions during which people are born, grow, live, work, learn and age. We work with other sectors to deal with the factors that influence health, including employment, housing, education,
health care, public safety and food access.
