 Health psychology is the study of the processes of psychology and behavior in health , illness, and health care. It aims to understand how psychological, behavioral, and cultural factors contribute to physical health and disease. Psychological factors can have a direct bearing on health. For example, cumulatively can harm the health of chronically occurring environmental stressors affecting the hypothalamic – pituitary – adrenal axis. Behavioral factors may affect the health of a person, too. A biopsycho-social approach is taken by clinical psychologists. In other words, health psychologists recognize that health is not only the result of biological processes ( e.g., a virus, tumor, etc.) but also of psychological (e.g., thoughts and beliefs), behavioral (e.g., habits), and social processes.
