Geriatric Anesthesia Research Articles

Geriatric anesthesia offers an extensive presentation of the science and practice of geriatric physical therapy.  Over the years, geriatric anaesthesia has kept pace with progress in geriatric surgery on a platform provided by increasing scientific evidence. Comorbidities involving different systems can affect the functional and clinical outcome of geriatric patients who undergo surgery. Chronological age, once the principle of physiological age has replaced a considerable 'risk' consideration for anaesthesia, favored by accumulating evidence. Evidence in geriatric patients associated with cardiovascular system and respiratory system comorbidities has helped to improve post-operative outcomes, based on proper pre-operative risk assessment and optimization. Decreased respiratory functions and decreased sensitivity to hypoxia and hypercapnoea expose geriatric populations to high risks of post-operative complications of the breathing. Regional anesthesia (RA) has the advantages of reduced blood loss during surgery and reduced transfusion and related hazards, reduced incidence of deep-vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism, improved post-operative analgesia and lower costs, all important considerations during geriatric anesthesia.
