Geoscience-review

Geoscience is that the study of the world - its oceans, atmosphere, rivers and lakes, ice sheets and glaciers, soils, its complex surface, rocky interior, and metallic core. This includes many aspects of how living things, including humans, interact with the world. Geoscience has many tools and practices of its own but is intimately linked with the biological, chemical, and physical sciences. Geoscience investigates the past, measures this , and models the longer term behavior of our planet. But it also involves the study of other planets, asteroids, and solar systems, both to raised understand the world and to expand our knowledge of the universe. The geoscientific studies proposed to be undertaken by NCPOR during the XII Plan period primarily seek to deal with issues associated with the Indian landmass and therefore the oceans surrounding it, like the geological evolution of the Indian landmass through time, the origin of the Arabian Sea basin, the expansion of Himalayas vis-a-vis the build-up of the Indus Fan, the ersosion response of Himalaya to a hypothesized strengthening of the monsoon at ~8my BP, the character of the crust under the continental margin, the continent-ocean boundary off the Arabian Sea and therefore the Bay of Bengal etc. The access to the deep sediment and ocean floor rocks through deep drilling in oceans and studies in Andaman subduction zone to know the geological complexities of the processes involved in tectonic movements.
