Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease

Gastroesophageal reflux disorder (GERD) is a digestive condition that occurs when acidic stomach juices or food and fluids return to the esophagus from the stomach. GERD affects people of all ages — from children to older people. Asthma sufferers are at a higher risk of developing GERD. GERD is often caused by acid reflux. A circular band of muscle around the bottom of your esophagus (lower esophageal sphincter) relaxes as you swallow, allowing food and liquid to flow through your stomach. In people who do not respond to other treatments, surgery can be an effective treatment for GERD which is hard to control. GERD can be a painful lifestyle disruption, it doesn't necessarily affect your lifespan. Those who can effectively manage their symptoms will enjoy a healthier and better quality of life. For some of the therapies may work better than for others.
