Pharmacoepidemiological studies measure patterns of drug use and drug side effects. This is a growing discipline that uses epidemiological techniques to study drug use in large populations. As the term suggests, pharmacoepidemiology combines clinical pharmacology with epidemiology. In pharmacology, the effects of drugs on humans are examined. This refers to the use of the patient's pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics to predict the effects of the drug on the patient. Epidemiology is the study of factors that determine the emergence and spread of disease among populations. Epidemiologists study how many diseases are in a certain area, who gets them and what specific factors are harmful to people. Epidemiology can often be divided into epidemiology of infectious and chronic diseases. The epidemiology of chronic diseases depends more on complex samples and statistical methods which is often used in pharmacoepidemiological studies to assess drug exposure over time. The pharmacoepidemiologist combines an interest in pharmacology and epidemiology and applies epidemiological principles to investigate the effects of drugs on the human population.
