Flexible methods to make welded aluminum components more fatigued. In addition to improving the fatigue cycle, the methods suggested can be easily applied in production processes. The key element of the methods is changing the residual stresses from tension to compression at fatigue-prone locations. The specimens tested are T-joints welded rectangular aluminum hollow section. Welding FE-simulations were performed to verify the magnitude and pattern of the residual stress fields before fatigue testing. Earlier, surveillance of exhaustion on four separate lots was carried out. One load was produced using elastically predeformed chords, two lots were treated with thermal prestressing, and one load was "as welded" representing a "reference case." The implementation of superimposed compressive stress fields results in a dramatically improved fatigue life, based on statistical evaluation of S – N data. Induction heating with an improvement in fatigue strength turned out to be the most promising method among the various batches.
