Eccentric Journals
The present review aims to discuss applications and mechanisms of excentric exercise in competitive sports training regimes. Eccentric work with the muscle is important in most sports. Excentric
muscle contractions boost efficiency during the concentrated process of stretch-shortening periods, which is critical in sprinting, jumping , throwing and running disciplines. Muscles triggered during lengthening movements may also serve as shock absorbers, decelerate during landing tasks or handle heavy external loads in sports such as alpine skiing with precision. The few available studies on qualified subjects indicate that excentric training will further boost maximum muscle strength. Such functional adaptations are based on increases in muscle mass, fascicle length , number of sarcomers and cross-sectional area of type II fibers in skeletal muscles. Identified eccentric loading modalities in athletic populations include classical isotonic exercises, accentuated jumping exercises, eccentric overloading exercises, and eccentric cycle ergometry.
