Developmental Delays In Children
Developmental Delay is when your child does not meet their planned developmental milestones. This is a persistent major or minor pause in the production cycle. If your child is lagging behind temporarily, that's not called developmental delay. Delay may occur in one or more areas such as gross or fine motor skills, vocabulary, social skills, or cognitive skills.Developmental delay is a diagnosis most often made by a doctor based on strict guidelines. However, the parent is usually the first to notice that their child is not progressing at the same rate as other children of the same age. When you think that your child could be "late," or "looks behind," talk about it with your child's doctor. Your pediatrician may in some cases pick up a delay during a visit to your office. To make sure the delay is not just a temporary pause, it will probably take multiple visits and likely a referral to a developmental specialist. Your doctor may use a set of screening tools during regular visits to the well-child.
