Biosurfactants

When grown in a culture medium containing hydrophobic / hydrophilic substrates, microbial Biosurfactants are extracellular compounds produced by microbes, such as bacteria , fungi and actinomycets. As their constituents, biosurfactants are hydrophilic and hydrophobic surface-active molecules which allow them to interact at interfaces and reduce surface tension. The chemical diversity of biosurfactants makes them a source of green chemicals that have many potential environmental applications. Biosurfactants have unique properties compared to their chemical / synthetic counterparts, such as high activity, less / or no toxicity, biodegradability and ease of processing from renewable energy sources.
