Bioremediation Articles

Bioremediation is a method used for the treatment of polluted products, including water , soil and subsurface material, by modifying environmental conditions to promote microorganism development and degrade target contaminants. Bioremediation is in many cases less costly and more efficient than other remedial alternatives. There are three types of bioremediation techniques: soil and groundwater in situ land treatment; air biofiltration; and bioreactors, which are primarily used in water treatment. While some soil cleaning techniques require the introduction of new microbes, the 'biostimulation' techniques increase natural processes of degradation by stimulating the growth of existing microbes. Many factors can limit the natural biodegradation processes, including the availability of nutrients, temperature, or soil moisture content.
