 Cardiovascular disease ( CVD) encompasses a variety of disorders that affect heart or blood vessel structures or functions. CVD's are a category of heart and blood vessel disorders. Cardiovascular disease typically refers to disorders involving reduced or blocked blood vessels that can cause a heart attack, chest pain ( angina) or stroke. There are four major types of CVD: coronary heart disease , stroke, aortic disease, peripheral arterial disease. Heart attacks and strokes are typically acute events, and are often caused by a blockage that prevents blood from flowing into the heart or brain.
