Vitamin D helps calcium absorb into your body. Calcium is one of bone 's principal building blocks. A shortage of vitamin D can lead to bone diseases like osteoporosis or rickets. Vitamin D also plays a role in your nerves, your muscles and your immune systems. There are three ways you can get vitamin D: through your skin, from your diet and from supplements. After exposure to sunlight your body naturally forms vitamin D. Excessive exposure to the sun can however lead to skin aging and skin cancer. So many people are trying to extract their vitamin D from other sources. Vitamin D-rich foods include egg yolks, salt-water fish, and liver.
