Virology is the study of viruses and virus-like organisms, including their taxonomy, disease-producing properties, but not limited to. A part of microbiology or pathology is also known as this. This discipline was dependent on advances in the chemical and physical sciences in the early years, but viruses soon became tools to test basic biochemical cell processes. Viruses have traditionally been viewed as disease-controlled or eliminated agents, in a rather negative context. Viruses, however, also have certain beneficial properties that can be exploited for useful purposes (in gene therapy or vaccinology for example). Bacteriophages are called viruses which affect bacteria. Viruses have a major impact on human bodies' immunology, leading to terrible diseases like AIDS and viral hepatitis. The genetic material in HIV is RNA unlike the other micro-organisms. It produces chronic infections and diseases in the host organisms because of its rapid replication capacity. Plant viruses have caused many deadly crop infections that lead to crop production losses.
