A stem cell transplant that is also called a blood or marrow transplant is the injection or infusion into your body of healthy stem cells to replace damaged or diseased stem cells. If your bone marrow stops functioning, and does not produce enough healthy stem cells, a stem cell transplant may be necessary. This procedure can also be done when the treatment of blood diseases such as leukemia , lymphoma, multiple myeloma or sickle cell anemia requires high-dose chemotherapy or radiation therapy. A stem cell transplant can help your body make white blood cells, red blood cells or platelets healthy enough and reduce your risk of life-threatening infections, anemia and bleeding.
