Shrimp Farming Scientific Journals:

Shrimp farming is an aquaculture business that occurs in either a marine or freshwater environment, producing shrimp or prawns for human consumption. Eyestalk ablation is the removal of 1 (unilateral) or both (bilateral) eyestalks from a crustacean. It is routinely practiced on female shrimps/prawns in almost every marine shrimp maturation or reproduction capability in the world, both research and commercial. The purpose of ablation under these circumstances is to arouse the female shrimp to develop mature ovaries and spawn. Most captive conditions for shrimp cause inhibitions in females that avoid them from developing mature ovaries. Even in circumstances where a given species will develop ovaries and spawn in confinement, use of eyestalk ablation surges total egg production and increases the percentage of females in a given population that contribute in reproduction. Once females have been subjected to eyestalk ablation, wide-ranging ovarian development often ensues within as little as 3 to 10 days.
