Pancreatic Stem Cells Scientific Journals

Pancreas is an organ made up of well differentiated exocrine and endocrine cells, the pancreas being a source of stem cells has been long debated. Nevertheless, numerous laboratory in vitro experiments have confirmed that the pancreas is a type of adult stem cell. There are two ideas currently suggested about the stem cell niche of adult pancreas. The first hypothesis is the hypothesis of 'neogenesis' where researchers assume that the β-islet cells derive from non-islet stem cells. The second theory is the theory of 'expansion' of which the β cell mass expands from existing β cells. Expanding work in the field of adult pancreatic stem cells in humans may contribute to ground breaking clinical intervention in the treatment of Type I diabetes mellitus and offer optimism to all patients affected by this condition to live a regular life.
