Oral Cancer
Mouth
cancer refers to all of the parts that make up the mouth (oral cavity) that grow cancer. Lip
cancer of the lips, gums, tongue , Within the lips, mouth roof, mouth floor.
Cancer found within the mouth is often referred to as oral
cancer or oral
cancer of the cavity. Mouth
cancer is one of several types of
cancer grouped into a category called
cancer of the head and neck. Mouth
cancer and other cancers of the head and neck often receive similar treatment. Mouth cancers arise when
cells produce changes (mutations) in their DNA on the lips or in the mouth. DNA of a cell contains instructions which tell a cell what to do. Changes in the
mutations tell the
cells to continue to grow and divide when healthy
cells die. The accumulation of abnormal
cancer cells in the mouth can form a tumor. Over time they will spread to other areas of the head and neck or other parts of the body within the mouth and onwards. Mouth
cancer most commonly starts in the flat, thin
cells (squamous cells) that line your lips and your mouth inside. Most of the oral cancers are carcinomous squamous cells. What causes the
mutations in squamous
cells that lead to the mouth can't be clear.
