In adulthood obesity is characterized by hypertrophy of adipocytes. Adipose tissue is involved in the regulation of homeostasis by energy. A major risk factor for diabetes and cardiovascular disease is high-fat diet-induced insulin resistance associated with obesity. Adipose tissue itself acts as the storage site for triglyceride (TG) and the free release of fatty acids in response to increasing energy demands. Adipose tissue is also involved in energy homeostasis regulation as an important endocrine organ that secretes a number of biologically active adipokines such as adipsin, leptin, plasminogen activator inhibitor-1, resistin, TNF-α and adiponectin. LPL is one of those adipokine review articles that summarizes the current state of understanding on a particular topic of research. Instead of announcing new study findings, they review or address work previously reported by scientists and academics.
