Neurology is that the branch of drugs concerned with the study and treatment of disorders of the systema nervosum. The systema nervosum may be a complex, sophisticated system that regulates and coordinates body activities. It has two major divisions: • Central nervous system: the brain and medulla spinalis • Peripheral nervous system: all other neural elements, like eyes, ears, skin, and other "sensory receptors" A doctor who focuses on neurology is named a neurologist. The neurologist treats disorders that affect the brain, medulla spinalis , and nerves, such as: • Cerebrovascular disease, like stroke • Demyelinating diseases of the central systema nervosum , like MS • Headache disorders • Infections of the brain and peripheral systema nervosum • Movement disorders, such as paralysis agitans • Neurodegenerative disorders, like Alzheimer's disease , Parkinson's disease, and Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (Lou Gehrig's disease) • Seizure disorders, such as epilepsy • Spinal cord disorders • Speech and language disorders
