A patent is basically a temporary monopoly under which the patent proprietor is given the exclusive right for a fixed period of time to produce, use and sell the patented invention. The five principal patentability requirements are: (1) patentable subject-matter, (2) utility, (3) novelty, (4) non-obviousness, and (5) enabling. The Treaty on Patent Law (PLT) aims to harmonize national patent formalities across the globe. It aims at streamlining and harmonizing the procedural specifications laid down by national or regional patent offices with regard to the filing of national or regional patent applications and the protection of patents and other additional requirements relating, for example, to patents or patent applications communication, description or documentation of patent and patent changes. The implementation of the PLT was considered to have positive impacts on users, especially in terms of simplifying procedures, according to an impact assessment. Innovations are the application of better solutions that meet new needs, inarticulated needs or existing market requirements.
