Importance Of Lipidomics

Besides reserves for energy storage, lipid droplets also form a source of fatty acids and sterol for biogenesis purposes. They are a critical component of lipid membranes and consist of amphipathic polar lipids, forming the basis for the formation of lipid membranes. Also, lipid membranes ensure the cell 's internal components are segregated from the outside environment. Also, lipids can serve as signaling molecules that can affect different functions within a cell, such as signaling, growth and death. Lipid degradation also initiates signaling cascades which result in calcium release from the endoplasmic reticulum. Lipids are also known to have immunomodulatory functions where lipids are recognizable by certain toll-like receptors. Lipids can also bind to CD1 receptors in a similar way and result in T-cell response. These lipid functions are also reflected in its role of influencing the process of differentiating stem cells.
