Herbal Medicine Peer-review Journals

Herbal medicine is the study of botany and the use of medicinal plants. Plants have been the basis for medical treatment in much of human history, and traditional medicine is still widely used. Modern medicine uses many herbal compounds as a basis for evidence-based medicine. While herbalists can use modern standards to test the effectiveness of herbs and medicines from natural sources, there are several clinical trials of high quality, purity or standard dosage. The field of application of herbal medicine is sometimes expanded to include mushroom and bee products as well as minerals, shellfish and some animal parts. Herbal medicine is also called phytomedicine or phytotherapy. Paraherbalism describes alternative and pseudo-scientific practices for the use of unrefined plant or animal extracts as unproven remedies or health promoting agents. The use of herbal medicines is more common in patients with chronic diseases such as cancer, diabetes, asthma and end-stage kidney disease. It has also been shown that many factors such as gender, age, ethnicity, education and social class are related to the prevalence of herbal medicine use.
