 Hepatology is the field of liver disease. The liver is that the body's largest organ and hepatology may be a large field. It includes, but is not limited to, the study of acute and chronic hepatitis, viral hepatitis, cirrhosis, genetic and metabolic liver diseases and their complications, liver cancer, liver transplantation, drug metabolism (which depends largely upon the liver), and immunology because it pertains to the liver. In ancient time, hepatology grew out of gastroenterology then became a subfield of it, but today it appears to be emerging as a freestanding medicine. The word hepato- part comes from the Latin hepaticus derived from the Greek hepatikos meaning the liver. The -logy part comes from the Greek logos meaning the study of, or field. Hepatology used to be viewed as a subspecialty of gastroenterology, however these days specialists can have practical experience in hepatology, which is rapidly rising as an unattached forte. As a basic organ that can be influenced by an enormous number of variables, the liver is generally the point of convergence in hepatology. A hepatologist for the most part just evaluates patients after they are alluded by their primary care physician. A hepatologist may likewise be associated with the follow-up of patients who have gotten a liver transplant.
