Golden Rice Mutagenesis

Golden rice is a variation of rice bent using genetic engineering to crop beta-carotene, a antecedent to vitamin A, in the edible parts of the rice. It is designed to produce fortified foods that will be grown and consumed in areas with a vitamin A. Golden rice varies from its parental strain by the addition of three beta-carotene biosynthesis genes. The parental strain can naturally produce beta-carotene in leaves, where it is involved in photosynthesis. However, the plant does not usually produce the endosperm pigment when photosynthesis does not occur. Golden rice met significant opposition from environmental activists and anti-globalization.
