Chemical biology is a discipline that combines the fields of chemistry and biology. The discipline involves the application to the study and manipulation of biological systems of chemical techniques, analyzes, and often small molecules developed by synthetic chemistry. Chemical biology can be used to analyze and control in vitro reactions and molecular interactions, but its tools are increasingly being used to monitor biological processes within living cells and organisms.Many methods of chemical biology aim to address biological questions by analyzing living organisms directly at the chemical level. Unlike studies using biochemistry, genetics, or molecular biology, where mutagenesis may provide a new version of the organism, cell, or biomolecule of interest, in vitro and in vivo chemical biology sample systems with small molecules engineered for a particular function or detected on the basis of biochemical or cell-based screening.
