Carcinoma is a cancerous development of surface tissues, i.e., digestive tract epithelial tissue , skin, blood vessels and various organs. A type of cancer that develops from epithelial cells is carcinoma (from the Greek karkinos, or "crab" and -oma, "growth"). Carcinoma cells tend to spread healthy tissue around them and cause secondary growth away from the original tumor. The cancer spreading process that forms one tissue into another is called metastasis. Carcinomas may occur in the reproductive tract, mucous membranes, lungs and other internal organs and glands, including the liver , pancreas, in addition to the skin and digestive tract; thyroid, ovaries, and prostate.
