The effective management of pain is critical to the care and recuperation of patients experiencing ill-health and/or injury. Ineffective pain assessment and management has been associated with lengthy hospitalization, complicated prognosis, inception and/or exacerbation of chronic pain, high rates of morbidity and mortality. Nursing practitioners as providers of frontline hands-on care to patients play a crucial role in the assessment and management of pain associated with disease, injury and/or their treatment. However, in spite of improving standards of nursing care and pain management, there is evidence to suggest that pain experienced by patients is often undertreated, ineffectively managed and a cause of patient dissatisfaction in many healthcare systems around the world. Gaps in nurses’ knowledge of, and attitude towards, pain management has been identified as a major barrier to effective care in most clinical settings.
