Xenotransplantation Journals

Xenotransplantation involves the transplantation of nonhuman tissues or organs into human recipients. Xenotransplantation refers to any procedure that involves the transplantation, implantation, or infusion into a person's recipient of either live cells, tissues, or organs from a nonhuman animal source or physical body fluids, cells, tissues, or organs that have had ex vivo contact with live nonhuman animal cells, tissues, or organs. Xenotransplantation products include those from transgenic or nontransgenic nonhuman animals and composite products that contain xenotransplantation products together with drugs or devices.Breakthroughs within the understanding of the mechanisms underlying xenograft rejection, that include advancements in glycoimmunology, proteomics, and molecular signaling, have enabled the event of novel modalities to stop or delay the event of antixenograft immune responses. In fact, innovative strategies are devised to modulate the recipient’s immune reaction to xenografts, to scale back the immunogenic power of transplanted cells, tissues, and organs, or to make a physical barrier between the human blood and therefore the xenograft. Despite the well-established similarities with regards to some aspects of anatomy and physiology between pigs and humans, transplanting pig tissues and organs into man is understood to elicit an aggressive immune response that commonly leads to premature failure of the graft.
