Supercritical Fluids In Analytical Chemistry Innovations

A supercritical fluid (SCF) is any substance above its critical point, at a temperature and pressure, where there are no distinct phases of liquid and gas. It can effuse like a gas through solids, and dissolve like liquid materials. In addition, close to the critical point, small changes in pressure or temperature result in large density changes allowing for "fine tuning" of many of the properties of a supercritical fluid. The fluid will also be called supercritical even if its temperature is below the critical point value. In this case, it will be a highly compressed liquid. Yet the obligation to be above the critical value is necessary.
