Substance Abuse
Substance abuse refers to the use of psychoactive substances that are harmful or dangerous, including alcohol and illicit drugs. The use of psychoactive substances can lead to
syndrome of dependence — a cluster of behavioral , cognitive and physiological
phenomena that develop after repeated use of the substance and a higher priority given to drug use than other activities and obligations, Policies that influence the levels and patterns of substance use and related harm can significantly reduce the problems of public
health attributable to substance use, and interventions at the level of the
health care system can work towards restoring
health in the individuals affected. Sedative, anxiolytic, analgesic, or stimulant properties with prescription
drugs are used for mood alteration. Sometimes it involves the diversion of
drugs from the individual it was prescribed for.
