 A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who focuses on psychological state, including substance use disorders. The issues are often sudden, like a scare, frightening hallucinations, thoughts of suicide, or hearing "voices." Or they'll be more long-term, like feelings of sadness, hopelessness, or anxiousness that never seem to lift or problems functioning, causing lifestyle to feel distorted or out of control. Their education and clinical training equip them to know the complex relationship between emotional and other medical illnesses and therefore the relationships with genetics and case history, to guage medical and psychological data, to form a diagnosis, and to figure with patients to develop treatment plans.
