Premature Ovarian Failure (POF) Scholarly Journal

Premature ovarian failure (POF) is a primary ovarian defect characterized by the absence of menarche (primary amenorrhea) or premature ovarian follicular fatigue before the age of 40 years (secondary amenorrhea). This is a heterogeneous disease that affects about 1% of women over the age of 40, 1: 10,000 women over the age of 20 and 1: 1,000 women under the age of 30. The most severe form occurs when there is no development of puberty and no primary amenorrhea whereas the form with onset of puberty is characterized by loss of the menstrual cycle (secondary amenorrhea), which is associated with depletion of premature follicles. POF is biochemically characterized by low levels of gonadal hormones and high levels of gonadotropins. POF has a strong genetic component. Chromosomal abnormalities are the main cause of primary amenorrhea associated with ovarian dysgenesis. Apart from the description of several candidate genes, the cause of POF remains unclear in many cases. Management involves replacing hormonal defects with estrogen / progestogen supplements.
